At Chiru Sports, we are always looking for ways to enhance our basketball coaching programs, focusing not only on skills but also on values and mindset.
One of the most inspiring books we've encountered in this journey is 'Leading with the Heart' by Coach Mike Krzyzewski, the legendary coach of Duke University and USA Basketball. This book explores the essence of leadership, emphasizing the importance of empathy, discipline, and integrity. It serves as a powerful reminder that effective coaching transcends mere drills and strategies; it revolves around fostering trust, resilience, and heart in every player.
Below are some of our favourite excerpts from the book.
"Coach K has shown he can win with a lot of talent -- and he's shown he can win with a little bit of talent. He brings kids in from all around the country, from different cultures and different backgrounds. He teaches them to transcend their differences for a greater good. He helps them learn to get along together, to work as a team, to respect one another, to care for one another."
"It's important to begin using plural pronouns right away. "Our" instead of "my". "We" instead of "I". "Us" rather than "me". I don't want the guys to be thinking this is "my" team -- Coach K's team. I want them to believe it's "our" team."
"Leadership is ongoing, adjustable, flexible, and dynamic. As such, leaders have to maintain a certain amount of discretion."
"Leaders have to search for the heart on a team, because the person who has it can bring out the best in everybody else."
"Recruit great individuals who are willing to be part of a team and who are coachable."
"When we win a game, everything isn't right. And when we lose a game, everything isn't wrong."
"Instill discipline to tell the truth. It's a waste of time to deal with anything less than the truth. Your team needs "instant belief" in what you say to them."
"I never use a whistle in practice. I want the players to get used to reacting to my voice - just like in a real game."
"The freedom to grow personally, the freedom to make mistakes and learn from them, the freedom to work hard, and the freedom to be yourself -- these four free-doms should be guaranteed by every leader in every organization."
"In any classroom, if the students can predict what the teacher is going to do all the time, they start memorizing and stop thinking. Too many rules and too much predictability absolutely kill creativity."
"When the buzzer sounds, don't be running up and down. Don't be jumping around. Walk off the court like you knew you were going to win here. Instead of high-fiving, let's walk out with class."
"We don't have an elite group of basketball players playing for the rest of the students. We have students, who happen to be basketball players, representing the rest of the student body at Duke University. The paramount goal is to secure an outstanding college education. That's the best tradition of all."
"My hunger is not for success, it is for excellence. Because when you attain excellence, success just naturally follows."
"Every person is different and has to be motivated differently. One player might respond to a pat of the rear, another might need to be kicked in the rear. And still another might need no attention at all. Some people respond when you challenge them, others when you encourage them. Some people respond when criticized. And some go into a shell with even the slightest bit of criticism."
"Sometimes, when you're blinded by your emotions and your commitments, it's best for someone else to tell you what to do."
"We make it a habit to view videotapes after practices and games because we want our players accustomed to dealing with the truth that the camera reveals."
"As teachers and coaches, we should remember that when mere winning is our only goal, we are doomed to disappointment and failure. But when our goal is to try do our best, when our focus is on preparation and sacrifice and effort -- instead of on numbers on the scoreboard -- we will never lose."
"When people leave, thank them for doing a great job and wish them well. Hold no grudges."
"If something isn't working, try something new and different. Innovate. Never give up. Never."
